ilug2007

So my flights are booked, now just looking for accommodation. So anyone with any recommendations for an hotel…

  • reasonably priced
  • in central Dublin
  • not too popular with hen / stag nights, we are talking Dublin on a bank-holiday weekend, I’ll want some sleep!!
  • within walking distance of the Alexander Hotel

…please add a comment or add to the ilug2007 wiki.

Some good details on Quickr and Connections positioning

Stuart McIntyre has posted a good post helping those of us pondering some of the product positioning of Quickr and Connections.

I particularly like this:

When used together they provide companies with unique value to address their collaboration requirements that span from formal, role-based team workspaces to informal community-driven social networks.

Things are getting clearer!

The virtualisation battle

Why can’t you run Mac OS on a Windows PC from within a VMware or Parallels virtual PC? Why does the Windows Vista EULA only allow the virtualization of Vista Ultimate and Business? It’s all to do with both companies wanting to control virtualization in order to protect profits.

Its interesting to watch where this is going now Apple have moved to Intel.

To me this appears as if there is an enterprise demand for OSX that Apple are almost reluctant to recognise. I wonder if Jobs has even entertained the idea of a cost-benefit analysis?

More on Lotus Connections and Lotus Quickr

Since I wrote my first post on these products, there have been a few more good ones appearing on blogs.

Rob Novak has a good article on Quickr answering some of the key questions relating to it replacing Quickplace, the choices on the backend and more.

Connections is being covered by Roberto Boccadoro with his detailed description of the product and its components over at Yellow Is The New Black. Luis Suarez also has a similar piece with his own take on things.

All in all, this is adding up to some great information on the products at such an early stage.

Now when will my invite to the Lotus Greenhouse site arrive!? ;-D

My first ubuntu bug report

I have had a problem for a while with the update-manager.

I finally got round to entering my bug report, so I am now the proud owner of an ubuntu bug!

Just have to wait and see whether its me that has broken something or an actual bug.

Lotus Quickr and Connections

I, like a lot of people, am following the information coming out of IBM Lotus regarding their recently announced products Lotus Quickr and Lotus Connections.

This week I had an interesting conversation with colleagues on our understanding of the products at this early stage. One point that came out was an apparent overlap, particularly on the blogging front. It raises some interesting questions. How will the products integrate? How do I base a decision whether to run blogs from Quickr or via the blogging component of Connections?

With little information so far from Lotus, it is difficult to grasp the differences. The innovation coming with these products is a big thing for the enterprise. Their successful adoption will depend in many cases on the ability of an organisation to generate a culture of open knowledge sharing. Here, IBM and its Business Partners will have a crucial role in helping companies deal with this culture shift.

Interesting times ahead.

An Introduction

We’re already two posts in, so I had better get an introduction out there before its out of place!

I won’t repeat all I have included in my About page, just a little flesh on the most interesting bones.

I have been working in the IT industry for nearly ten years, the last eight or so with Lotus technology in particular. I read a lot on the web, particularly on areas relating to my work. I like writing, and this blog I hope will give me some focus for my thoughts and opinions. However I am rather out of practice and it is something I would like to improve. So don’t expect too many large articles or in depth analysis, at least to start with!

Check out my About page if you would like to know more about me, or even better, hang around and chime in on the discussion.

There is a lot to do in setting up a blog!

I am starting to realise just how much there is to do when setting up a new blog! This might take me a little time to get how I want.

I am using WordPress which is offered by my hosting, although I am still considering a domino based blog and being true to the cause! To be honest though I quite like WordPress. I also think it helps to vary things a little and get a different perspective on things, and you never know, I might learn a little php one day!
